FARM EQUIPMENT MANAGER

Serge Island Farms, St. Thomas

 

THE ROLE

The incumbent will ensure the timely availability of farm vehicles and associated equipment in order that all farming operations can be executed as efficiently and cost effectively as possible.

 

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensure the execution of maintenance and repair activities on various heavy duty equipment including trucks and tractors, excavators, bulldozers, backhoes and high pressure pumps, milking parlor equipment, deep well pumps and irrigation systems; bulk feed storage systems
  • Carry out Building Maintenance
  • Ensure the prompt acquisition, transfer, deployment and  repair of all vehicles and equipment associated with farming operations
  • Specify and source  appropriate equipment and spare parts to drive equipment reliability, equipment utilization,  fuel efficiency, ensuring that an  adequate spare parts inventory is updated and  maintained
  • Working collaboratively with farm managers, overseeing the timely dispatching of tractors, associated pieces of equipment, irrigation pumps and engines in executing the day to day activities on the farms.
  • Visit the farms to check on the functioning of pieces of equipment and make recommendations for their proper functioning to the farm managers.
  • Play a lead role in the compilation of capital and recurrent budget and ensure responsibility for their execution
  • Provide leadership in the areas of Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Protection & Sustainability, Food Safety and Cost Effectiveness.   
  • Be responsible for training and disciplining of assigned staff.
  • Be a main player in the preventative maintenance programme
  • Be on call in the event of emergencies involving vehicles and equipment.
  • Execute special projects as required from time to time.

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Diploma or Associate degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Training/ certification in Agricultural Engineering
  • Certification from a recognised automotive training institution.
  • Auto Manufacturer’s certification
  • At least five 5 years experience working in farm equipment maintenance operations to include maintenance to agricultural tractors, pick-ups, pumps and engines
  • Mechanical knowledge and experience with diesel equipment
  • Knowledge of standard practices, materials, tools and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of motor vehicles and engines.
  • Knowledge of safety issues in the use of tools, equipment and supplies used in the mechanical repairs
  • Ability to diagnose mechanical, electrical and hydraulic malfunctions
  • Computer literate.
  • Equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
